W.H. Hobaugh Custom Mauser -- 30/06 AI
A truly remarkable example of the gunsmith’s craft. This rifle built by renowned Montana Barrel maker and Gunsmith Bill Hobaugh. Hobaugh’s barrels were made of a special hardened alloy, with cut rifling. He was also an accomplished rifle maker, as we see here. Hobaugh’s barrels were the choice of many big name Rifle builders of his day including Lenard Brownell and Randy Selby, he even came highly recommended by Elmer Keith. This beauty is based on a Yugo Mauser action with a Canjar Trigger, Talley mounts holding a Leupold Vari X II 3-9×40. Features include a 13.7” LOP over a 1” Pachmayr pad, 26” sporter taper Hobaugh barrel with brilliant bluing and jeweling on the metal. The Stock looks to be a stunning piece of walnut with an outstanding graceful shape and flow, not to mention the ornate checkering fields surrounded by fine carving. This is an example of some of the finest gunmaking you could buy in the USA in the 1960s-70s, and the work holds its own today in my opinion. The rifle is chambered for 30/06 Ackley Improved, PO Ackley an innovator and contemporary to Mr Hobaugh. Forming AI cases are easy as firing normal ‘06 round in it and can be loaded with the readily available dies from Precision Reloading and several other firms. AI rounds make the brass much longer lasting and less prone to stretching. Not to mention the boost of 100-200 FPS due to the additional case capacity, data readily available from Nosler and others.
